The Holidays Are Fast Approaching! – HouseSmarts TV

October 12, 2012

It seems like it comes earlier and earlier every year?the race to Thanksgiving and then the Christmas holiday. No matter what holiday you celebrate, this is the time of year when family and friends come together to reconnect and enjoy each others company.
Company? Is your home ready for all those guests? Here are some tips on how to get your home in tip top shape for the holidays.

Keep an eye on safety! With people coming and going make sure you have non-slip mats under all your area rugs. If you like to burn candles make sure you place a reminder to blow them out before you go to bed ? like setting the timer on the oven to go off a half hour before you typically go to sleep. Make sure your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors have fresh batteries and are tested. And if you are running extension cords indoors for lighting tape them to the floor out of walking paths.

If you are going to be serving a big meal and some of your wood furniture is looking a little worn brighten it up with wood finish brightener and some #0000 steel wool. You can use this on your dining room table, chairs and even your kitchen cabinets. If those chairs are loose flip them over and pull apart the joints and insert some wood glue. Pound it back together and let dry for 24 hours. That will tighten up those chairs once and for all.

Finally, how about a fresh coat of paint? It?s an easy job and a splash of new color will brighten up the whole space. With all of these paint-and-primers in one you can do this job very quickly and easily. I have used the new paint from Ace called Clark and Kensington (I work with Ace as their national spokesperson). It goes on smoothly and covers really well.
