Why would Phil Davis want a rematch with Lyoto Machida?

August 15, 2013

Phil Davis would like to shut down any discussion of a rematch with Lyoto Machida. In Davis’ eyes — and in official records — he won the fight. There is no need to correct a wrong. Davis said this kind of fight was typical of Machida.

“Name one fight that he didn?t finish where he beat the crap out of somebody. You live by that sword, you die by that sword,” said Davis on the MMA Hour. “When you habitually leave it to the judges, that strategy will fail you. I can?t say it any other way.”

When Machida was the champion in 2009, he won a controversial decision over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. He lost the belt to Rua in the rematch. He lost a tight decision to Quinton Jackson in 2010, then won a tight decision over Dan Henderson earlier this year. There was only a rematch with Rua.

Davis’ win over Lyoto Machida at UFC 163 was controversial to fans, media, and even UFC president Dana White. They disagreed with the judges’ call that Davis won the three-round bout. But it wasn’t controversial to Davis. He pointed out how the stats backed up his win not long after his fight:

He wants to look forward and move up in the light-heavyweight bout. It may be what Machida’s camp wants, but it’s not a bout that makes much sense for Davis.
